Cameras – High Res. & IP

High Resolution and IP Cameras have resolutions well above 600 lines. IP cameras are commonly referred to as Mega Pixel cameras as they have resolutions exceeding 1.0M pixels. IP Cameras connect to a Network Video Recorder (NVR) or a computer. They usually connect via Ethernet cabling (like computers) and are also powered remotely – usually by the Ethernet Switch they are connected to using a feature called Power over Ethernet (PoE).
High resolution cameras are used commonly for situations where a large amount of detail is required such as facial recognition, ID and number plate recognition, cash handling, or in areas where the camera has a wide or deep field of view. The resolution of the camera will allow recorded material to contain enough detail to ensure that ‘zooming in’ provides clear pictures. IP cameras also typically have video analytics software on-board which can be useful for number plate recognition, facial recognition and smart movement detection.
Styles of High Resolution and IP Cameras include;
- Dome
- Full Body
- Bullet
- Wireless
Both Dome and Full Body cameras can be made to provide pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) functions. This is usually achieved by utilising a special motorised housing for the camera. PTZ functions are driven by a small console which is usally located near to the operator, or via the DVR/NVR itself. PTZ camera consoles allow operators or guards to preset and recall numerous views that are useful to them.
Many different camera features are considerations when selecting cameras for premises; These include…
- Resolution
- Minimum brightness (sensitivity)
- Lens ratio
- Dynamic Range
- Black & White or Colour
- Operating voltage
- Analytics
Lighting too is an important consideration when chosing a camera – there needs to be enough ambient light to capture a reasonable image, otherwise the exercise is a complete waste of time. Sometimes there is not sufficient light and in these cases IR floods or cameras with built-in IR illumination can be used.
